Step 1: Decide what to talk (blog) about:
This is called your ‘niche’.
This is probably the most difficult part, you need to be passionate about the subject to be able to write articles or associated product reviews on it. Brainstorm what products link with your niche. Say for instance if you were a walker (not the walking dead type) you could promote places to stay, comfortable and weather ready attire, tourist attractions, camping gear the list is endless. If you love fashion and people rate your style you could talk about everything from belts to nail polish.
Step 2: Pick a domain name:
Careful with this one, don’t limit your audience for instance try not to be geographic if you live in Sheffield and your blog is about building don’t call it sheffield builders as you want to gain as much traffic as possible to your site to maximise exposure on the net. Don’t rush ahead and check a domain just yet as that’s an apprentice error, most hosting gives you a free domain and it’s automatically integrated into your site for free. If you buy the domain externally you’re going to need to transfer it to your hosting site when you decide who to use.
Step 3: Find a host:
There are many out there and affiliates are all over them with the fantastic deals of use my link and get 50% off etc etc. There are a multitude of “How To Start A Blog” articles on the internet which are nothing more than affiliate marketers trying to sell you web hosting partners. Articles show you how to sign up for web hosting, but provide zero help when it comes to actually teaching you how to start a successful blog. It’s easy to set up the hosting side you don’t need any assistance with that as it is walked you through but they make it seem like a big deal. Again another subject we will go into with more detail.
Step 4: Choose a blogging platform:
The easiest ones for beginners are WordPress and Blogger, you don’t need to be a tech geek to understand and manoeuvre yourself around. We will go into this in more depth as you need to be sure of what you are going to go with rather than a headache further down the line when you realise it’s not allowing you to do what it is you are needed or your site gets compromised.
Step 5: Design & use your blog!
Start writing and sharing, see what works. If you are not being incognito then ask your family and friends to share all your posts. You need to maximise exposure on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Reddit, Quora, and Instagram so that you leave a trail on the internet in as many places as possible.
